Industrial Design and Project Management
UES International Hardware
UES International has a collection of over 6,000 products ranging from access hardware to water tanks. Working as an Industrial Designer, I was responsible for designing new solutions for key clients, such as a door-lock for the bus industry, brackets for reflector lights on truck side rails to improve safety, and water tanks for use by truck and 4x4 owners to wash their hands before re-entering their vehicle.
What was involved
Designed and developed new solutions to industrial hardware applications, such as vehicle door locks and water tanks
Managed the design process for each project, from aligning with sales and marketing stakeholders to develop a design brief, then from concept, development, implementation through to production and quality control.
Developed extensive knowledge of a wide range of industrial processes, including sheet metal fabrication, gravity casting, sand casting and high pressure die-casting, injection molding various polymers and rubbers, rotational molding and plastic and metal extrusion
Project managed the budget and timeline for each new hardware product
Documented over 400 existing hardware products in both 2D and 3D formats to develop new marketing collateral and build an extensive 3D library
Achievements
Products achieved specification in government and military project (flap hinge, drop-T locks)
Improved a previously failing ‘drop-T lock’ product by simplifying the internal compression mechanism, reducing the weight of the product by 40% and significantly minimising assembly time
Successfully integrated existing components, such as euro-barrel locks not commonly used in industrial hardware applications, and bolt-on actuators into new designs to improve both timeline and cost deliverables.
Developed and implemented over 35 products during my time at UES
